What is Monkey fever? Why is it spreading quickly?
Monkey fever also known as Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) is spreading quickly across Karnataka and also Bangalore . Already 2 deaths have been reported and there are current 49 cases of monkey pox . Most cases are coming from Uttara Kannada District.
Monkey fever is a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted by ticks in forest areas, it primarily affects monkeys and can affect human beings by tick bites or contact with infected animals. The primary mode of infection, arises from feeding monkeys which are infected might lead to bite from infected ticks or from a deceased monkey, secondary mode of infection can occur from infected animal blood. However, no human to human transmission have been reported yet.

What are the symptoms of monkey fever ?
Symptoms of monkey fever occur after a time period of 3 to 8 days. Initial symptoms are
- Chills
- Fever
- Headache
- Severe muscle pain
- Vomiting
- Low blood pressure
- Itchy and painful rashes
- Bleeding
- Severe exhaustion
It might also lead to a reduction in counts of platelets, RBC’s, and WBC’s.
After a while of initial symptoms, there is a possibility of neurological symptoms from headaches to chances of tremors , impaired vision and mental disturbance.
How to prevent monkeypox? Is there a treatment?
There are some prevention techniques which are need to be kept in mind, if you don’t want to get Monkey Virus:
- Use insect repellents.
- Avoiding contact with infected animals.
- Practice good hygiene just like Covid19.
- Wear long sleeved clothes and pants
- Minimize contact with monkeys and other forest animals.
- Get immediate medical treatment, if you experience any of the above mentioned symptoms or after visiting an infected area.
- Get vaccinated if you live nearby infected area.
- Seek help from professional for treatments and medicines.
Possible Treatment: Currently there is no specific treatment provided for Monkey Pox. However it is recommended to seek immediate treatment and medical attention. Proper hydration and rest can help the infected person to cure the infection.
To Prevent this fever, you can also get vaccination and booster dose. However it was found that Vaccines are not effective once infected with fever.
