Our freedom fighters have done such great work in letting the country free. They were so courageous that because of them we are living this great life. The passion for freedom included many movements and practices but the prominent and that was shaking for the Britishers was the Swadeshi movement. Swadeshi Movement, a turning point in India’s quest for independence Started after British colonial rule in the early 20th century, based on principles of self-reliance and national pride, it became the vehicle for the powerful to express discontent and create unity among Indians determined to be free from the economic and cultural institutions imposed by foreign rule.

From around, 1850-1904

Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Dadabhai Naoroji, Mahadev Govind Ranade, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Ganesh Vyankatesh Joshi, and Bhaswat K Nigoni began the first step to promote Indian nationalism

In around, 1871-1872

Namdhari Sikhs banned English cloth in Punjab. Ram Singh Kukka banned English clothes, education, and courts and promoted hand-spun cloth ‘khaddar’

In around around, 1905-1917

This movement opposed the 1905 Bengal Partition ordered by Lord Curzon.

From around, 1918-1947

The movement was further taken by Mahatma Gandhi where the movement took the actual power, when he pledged to ban foreign goods by burning 1,50,000 English cloth at Elphinstone Mill Compound, Mumbai on 31st July 1921

He also set up khadi spinning wheels all over the country and branded khadi as a freedom fighter.

Other Factories

Indians began ditching British goods to make Indian goods, albeit at higher prices. The impact was exacerbated by a 20% drop in sales to the British. The Lal-Bal-Pal trio formed several committees, and Balagangadhar Tilak spearheaded a Ganesh Utsav as a way to popularize local products used and consumed from ceramics to sweets. Another notable member of the Swadeshi Movement was V. of Tuticorin who took over their British steam navigation company and converted it into Indian owned shipping company and named it SWADESHI SHIPPING COMPANY IN 1906.
